Authors analyzed palpable breast lesions of 253 patients who visited and were treated at the department of General Surgery, National Seoul Hospital, for 7 years and 6 months from Jan. 1975 to June 1982.
The results were summarized as follows:
1) Of 253 cases, 248 patients were female(98%) and 5 patients were male(2.0%).
2) The most prevalent age group in breast disease were late fourth decade and early fifth decade(35.2%), followed by late third decade and early fourth decade(31.2%).
3) The initial syrntoms of breast lesions was palpable mass in the breast(88.1%).
4) Duration of illness was variable but 1 to 2 month was most common(29.6%).
5) 38.8% of breast masses was 2 cm. to 5 cm. in size and 8% of breast masses were above
5 cm. in Size.
6) The lesions were located at the right side in 96 cases (37.8%), at the left side in 98 cases (38.7%) and bilateral in 62 cases (23.5%). The most frequent site of masses were upper outer quadrant(78 cases).
7) The most common lesion in female was mammary dysplasia(45.3%), followed by inflammation(22.7%), fibroadenoma(18.5%) and malignancy(14.6%).
8) In malignancy, 94. 6% was arised from mammary duct, of which infiltrative adenocarcinoma with fibrosis was most frequent(72.9%).
9) Accurate clinical diagnosis was performed in 70.8%.
